Research on Mental Illness

From researching into both Schizophrenia and Paranoia I have developed a greater awareness of mental illnesses and how badly it can effect people. This has allowed me to plan a more realistic film as my character can be seen to have both of these illnesses. I used elements of Schizophrenia within my dream sequence as he hallucinates himself and begins to panic, this also then links to paranoia as the character is beginning to convince himself that something is there when in reality it is not.

Evaluation Questions

Your evaluation requires you to respond to these certain questions:

  1. In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  2. How effective is the combination of your main and ancillary tasks
  3. What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
  4. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

This is to be presented electronically in one of the following forms:
  • a presentation using slideshow software such as powerpoint
  • a blog or website
  • a podcast
  • a DVD with 'extras'

Actors profile

Name: George Turner

Occupation: A2 Drama, Media and PVA student

Age: 18

Experience: Last year's coursework video, school panto, drama performances in general and youtube videos.

Why i chose this actor: He fits the idea of the age range that i wanted to aim my film towards as well as he does not look like an adult therefore looks like he could be vulnerable to his thoughts.

How will my actor look in my film: My actor will either be dressed in full black to set the eerie feel to the film or in full white to add the psychotic part to the film. The actor will either be wearing no make up or add darkness under the eyes to show the stage of lack of sleep.

Reliability: we both take media therefore we will have a lot of lessons together as well as we both have a lot of frees that we can work together in.

Animatic

This is a short animatic to give the visual and audio atmosphere that i wish to create for my audience to view as well as my final product to possibly look like. The audio is from Youtube and is royalty free, however this is not the audio I wish to use in my final product as I wish to keep on searching for an audio that will fit into the product I want to create as well as my sound affects.

research on schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a long term health condition that causes multiple different psychological affects:

  • hallucinations such as hearing/seeing things that do not exist.
  • delusions that are unusual beliefs which are not based on reality and usually contract the evidence provided.
  • confusion on what has really happened and what was a delusions/hallucination.
The reason for schizophrenia to occur in someone thoughts is still yet to be unknown, however most scientists believe that the reason for it is due to combinations of genetics as well as environment. It is believe that certain things/situations make you more vulnerable to developing the mental condition as certain things/situations can trigger it.

The Open Door Analysis

The film starts off with someone playing the piano as audio whilst the film industry icon comes up on the screen. The title credits then shows up and then makes it become suspense as the titles they have used seem quite sinister. The piano audio then stops and you begin to see a river. A long shot is used to show a woman walking with dietetic sounds of her heels walking on the concrete. A medium shot is then used to see her in more detail. A tracking shot is then used to watch her approach a house. At this point the audio is only the wind from what you can hear outside, however because it is so quite it builds up suspense to the audience. A close up is then used on her hand whilst she opens the front door.

An aerial shot is then used as she walks through the door followed by a close up on the door when the woman tries to shut the door however leaves it open, suspense audio typically used in horror films begins to start playing. It then cuts to a medium shot of her sitting at an island in her kitchen. A close up is then used whilst she begins to cut a cucumber. It then cuts to the woman pampering herself, oblivious of anything as the cucumber is over her eyes whilst she lays in bed. The suspense music begins to get higher and lower and this point putting the audience on the edge of their seats as they are trying to prepare themselves for something to happen however they do not know when or what is about to happen.

It then cuts a long shot of a black silhouette however is blurred for what seems to be outside. It then carries on to cut from the woman to outside as it builds intensity with the outside as it builds up speed and narrative. The character is yet to be unknown then walked through the door using a close up on their hand, then walks up the stairs using a close up on their feet. A tilt shot is used from her head to her feet which you can then see the character coming towards her through the door leaving the audience on the edge of their seats. The woman then says 'Hey Jamie' as if she knows who had just walked through the house, a close up is then used on her ears where the unknown character whispers in her ear 'It's not Jamie'. The woman then jumps up and is pushed straight back down by the antagonist.

Then screen then blacks out and it leads to the woman waking up again, however in a different outfit. Dietetic sounds as well as lighting of lightning is used to present a thunder storm setting the typical type of horror. Close up and medium shots are used to show the woman's panic in her face and body language. Everything then seems quite again apart from what is going on outside, she then begins to get up and goes to get her keys.

The scenery is now very dark and eerie as she begins to walk downstairs into pitch black. Tension is built as she begins to walk down very slowly and steady however the stairs begin to squeak so if someone was to still be in the house they would automatically hear her. It then cuts to a close up of the door which turns into A POV shot as it turns from the door to the woman walking down the stairs. The woman then shuts the door and locks it by this point the audience would be at the edges of their seats as they are anxious of what is going to happen next. The tense music then begins to play again, the higher and the faster the pace of the music the more anxious the audience begins to come. A close up is then used to show the woman's emotions, however in the background you begin to see the antagonist in the background coming towards her in a mask.

In my opinion this short film was one of the best I watched due to the fact it left me on the edge of my seat and the film techniques that they used were very effective.

Engrenage Analysis

It begins with the film industry icons. It then cuts to a close up of lift numbers going up and then a close up of a man's face which he has two cuts underneath his eye. Once the lift gets to level 42 the male persona begins to run out and slow motion is used to create tension in the narrative. Beeping is then heard and then the camera begins to show a bomb counting down from 59 seconds.

It then blacks out comes up with the movie title and blacks out again. It then cuts to an old style train track where a man is walking along the tracks and then a close up is used on his feet when he stops on the track and stands there. It then shows the man putting what seems to be oil on the track, you then hear a dietetic sound of a train and then see a shot of the train, which then builds up speed in the narrative as the camera focuses on the wheels. A shot of the driver is then used.

It then cuts to a mountain and a man is running furiously through the woods, which is the same man that was running to the bomb, he then gets to the mountains. An over the shoulder shot is used to see what the man is seeing and he can see the train going through the mountains. A close up of someone's feet is then used to present someone is chasing him, he then begins to start running again. It then cuts back to the scene where the bomb is and then same man running towards the bomb (therefore match on action is being used). It then shows a dog chasing after him and at the same speed or what the camera has seemed it to be it cuts to the train. A close up is then used to show the man on the tracks putting his ear on the tracks and then a fast tracking shot is used to track the tracks to where the train is.

The man then begins to pull the leaver for the tracks and then the man with the bomb begins to cut the wires. However the leaver doesn't seem to be moving and the train is getting closer and closer as he begins to panic that he won't be able to change them. Match on action is then used as when he finally gets the leaver to move the man also cuts the wire to the bomb. The train then successfully drives though the track and a close up is used on the man's face to show his relief. It then blacks out and shows a close up of the wires and the man. A zoom in shot is then used to see that the bomb has been stopped as it is on 42 seconds, the same number that the man is on the level of, therefore is this number a clue to the audience? It then begins to start counting down and the man's eyes open quickly starting all of the action again, it then cuts to the man running away from the dog's again and then begins to show the train again, however the man is working with coal this time. A 42 is then showed on the front of the train.

Then all three scenes then begin to go down hill as the man running begins to start loosing energy the man running the train comes to a track that is spilt however is too late as he can't stop the train and the man with the bomb does not know what else to do as the wires have already been cut. The match on action makes the narrative very tense at this point as the timer of the bomb will match when the train will fall off the tracks. It then continues to use close ups of the man's face and then the timer and then train leaving the audience on the edge of their seats and waiting for something to stop everything bad happening at the last second. However this does not happen as the train does fall off the tracks, the timer then begins to become very slow in the last second as if the last second was a minute. It then becomes very fast again and the man cuts another wire. However this film leaves the audience on the edge of their seats as it then cuts to the credits.

In my opinion I liked the film's techniques a lot as they worked as the creator intended them too, however I find the storyline very unclear as there was no explanation as to why the man was in multiple different places at once as they couldn't be flashbacks due to the fact he would of died in the train, however this may be what the creator intended.

Portal: No Escape Analysis

I picked this film before I watched it due to the fact it looks/is described to something like to as I want my short film to look like.

It begins with a woman dramatic waking up and in a state of confusion a close up is to used to show this. It then straight away cuts to her trying to get up and she is refrained from much movement as she is in a hospital gown in isolated room with only a bed to be seen. Suspense music begins to start playing to engage the audience to a higher state as well as the audience begins to sense danger as on the hospital gown there is blood presented coming from the woman as she draws attention to it but putting her arm near it then begins to start looking at what has happened. Whilst this is going on the audio begins to become much more tense building up more suspense to the audience. A long shot is then used as she quickly moves over to the mirror so she can investigate the bleeding further. A close up is the used to show the panic in her face whilst she looks in the mirror. She then frantically tries to take off the gown and smashes the mirror once she realises that there is nothing there for her to be bleeding, this can then shock the audience and empathise with the character. She then picks up part of the smash glass and a close up is used to show that a bar code has been printed onto her neck. The audio then begins to become much more tense and dramatic. Close ups and medium shots are then frequently used to show the characters emotions, you then begin to see that there is a tally written on the wall which the camera then begins to focus on as well as the character.

You then see as an audience a CCTV footage of the woman running in the current moment in time. It then blacks out and goes to a close up of the tally on the wall this then indicates to the audience that this is a clue to the narrative in which the need to take notice too. It then cuts to a medium shot of the woman training/exercising as she is shown to be quite muscle it then cuts too and from the CCTV footage to normal filming. The audio at this point then becomes quite calm however still builds tension to keep the audience engaged. In-between her training/exercising you see the woman feeling/looking around the room for an escape. A close up is then used to show food being slid into the room for her through what could be seen as a prison gap. The CCTV footage the becomes running at a much faster pace making the audience more engaged as they do not want to miss anything that happens as it may be crucial to the narrative.

This then becomes a repetitive routine for the character to train, eat and sleep as well as find an escape this then begins to represent to the audience that the woman could be an experiment of some sort. Suddenly there is a close up where you see the woman face as if she has finally come to the realisation of something, possibly the escape? She then runs to the bed and moves it and then climbs on it to then find something that opens and there is an object of some sort which is unclear to the audience of what it is, she then climbs down from the bed (a long shot is used). A close up is then used to show the woman inserting her hand and suddenly something shoots out of it and opens to what seems to be a portal. A medium shot is then used to show her trying to work out what to do next, she then shoots another portal on the wall opposite. A long shot is then used to show the woman putting her hand in one side of the portal and her hand coming out of the other portal on the opposite wall, creating a sense of no escape.

Suddenly, an armed character comes into the room and the woman tries to shoot him with what is seen to be a portal gun, he then drops to the ground and the audio begins to become much more tense again. She then tries to escape out of the door that the armed character came out of. A long shot is then used to show the woman running down a long corridor with corners that she is unsure of what is about to approach her. You then see another armed character heading towards her, which she again begins opens a portal so she can get closer to him and hits him to the floor. She then proceeds to run down the corridor until she gets to a stair case where she can hear walky talkies talking to each other and there are multiple of the armed people coming towards her one after another. She then makes a portal that gets her to the top of the stair case and escapes out of the door that is at the top. A close up is then used to show her relief she then begins to walk around outside where she is automatically followed out by the armed men.

She then opens a portal as she falls off a building to the top of another building. However it then begins to seems unrealistic as what seems to be the town in front of her begins to glitch and she touches it showing that there is a digital wall fixed in front of her. The camera then shows the hallway kind of like the one she just ran down behind the digital wall showing that she hasn't escaped and that she is trapped within a highly operated building. The audio then becomes highly tense and slow. The camera then blacks out leaving the audience tense and in suspense of what is about to happen next. It then cuts to the credits and the audience is left on a cliff hanger, the typography fits well with the film as it looks futuristic and digital.

Overall parts of the short film dragged out however i was engage to the narrative and did not get bored the whole way throughout as I was intrigued to the narrative and not much was given away to what was to happen next or even at the end.

Knowing Too Much Analysis

It begins with a icon of their film industry "Zion In Chaos". It then comes up with a warning to the audience that some people not feel comfortable watching as it is suspense and includes violence therefore it may not be suitable for everyone. It begins with a tracking shot in the dark of a man walking on the phone outside with a paper in his hand.

Suspense music begins to build up as the camera then follows back to the same corner that the character was just on screen walked round and another man in a suit walks round. A gun shot is then heard in the background. The original character is then back on screen and begins to start looking around and at the paper and walking at a faster pace in a sense of panic. A gun shot is then heard again and the character begins to start running an aerial shot is used then a tracking shot as he begins to run up a stair case in a car park which is well lit. The audio then begins to become heavy paced and like a heartbeat.

As he gets to his car which as audience we see as an escape he starts to panic and cannot find his keys however once he finds them he can't find the key he needs/drops them, slowly down the time he has to get away therefore creating a sense of panic to the reader. As he goes to pick his keys up he hears a loud sound, a close up is then used to show the confusion/panic on his face. The camera also keeps cutting back to the stairs therefore giving a clue to the audience that the danger is about to come from the stairs. His phone then begins to ring, a close up in then used to show the confusion in his face again. As he answers the phone a medium shot is used to show behind the character, giving the audience an insight that something is about to happen behind him.

The man in the suit then appears from the stairs and begins to walk towards him a long shot is used to show all this action. The audio then begins to become faster and higher pitched as he walks towards him, the main character is clueless to all of the due to the fact that he is on the phone still. The man then sends the main character unconscious as he bangs his head agains't the car and then goes into his pocket pulls out a gun and loads it. However you don't see this as the camera is on the other side of the car, although diegetic sounds are used to present the audience what is going on. A medium shot is used to show under the car so that you can see the main character on the floor as he begins to wake up, you then hear 3 diegetic sounds of a gun and the characters body drops, such as his hand and his head connoting that he is dead.

A long shot is then used to show the mans action of picking up the paper that was in the main characters hand, he begins to read it then walks away with the paper. A tracking shot is used behind the man in the suit as is focused in the centre of the frame. His phone then begins to ring and the audio begins to become suspense again as he goes to answer the phone. It then cuts to the credits.

This film really did not appeal to me as the narrative was not thought out or deep enough as nothing was explained and in my opinion seemed pretty pointless. As well as most of the storyline/shots were unrealistic and just seemed to be elongated such as when he is trying to get into his car and when he is in the phone, as if he was trying to get into his car quickly he would talk on the phone whilst he was getting in his car or wouldn't answer the phone at all if he was panicking and thought he was in danger. Overall I did not like this film at all.

Target Short Film Analysis

The film automatically starts with the action as it shows a top end car with close ups and then shows the main character who is wearing a suit and glasses, therefore giving off the James Bond kind of atmosphere. It also has the typical action audio music playing in the background. It then cuts to a close up of the car going into 'agent mode activated'.

It then follows the typical action film of fast, cut shots. It then cuts to a man on a coach who seems to have just woken up, he gets up put his bag on and leaves the coach. The typical spy typography is used to indicate where the current scene is based and says 'England, Cambridge'. The bus then moves and the camera zooms into the character as he is looking on a map for where he wants to go, the filming then becomes sped up and the audio of an orcordian is played at a fast pace, giving off a tourist feel to the audience as he also starts taking pictures of everywhere he goes.

Suddenly you begin to hear a phone ring and the character on screen turns to the telephone box. and the number comes up as 'M16'. He then goes up to the phone and answers it, close ups are used on the telephone and the characters mouth to create the audience's focus as to what is being said on the phone as the person on the other end says 'you have permission to blow your cover, good luck'. The man then changes back into the suit and puts back on his sunglasses. Tense music then begins to play. Tracking shots are then used to follow the character. A target effect is then used on screen and goes to a fast speed until it comes up with a person and says 'target required'.

The spy then comes into eye sight of the target and the music begins to become much more tense. The scene then leads to a typical spy movie of a market place where the spy is trying to find the target. The target effect then comes back on screen and is unable to find the target. The character then goes to the top of the building to get a better view or to even find his target. He then finds his target and does the typical jumping off buildings, going down stairs, body flips, etc to get to his target, he is also being kept updated through his ear piece. Once the character gets his target the ear piece says 'mission accomplished'. It then cuts to the credits.

In my opinion I did not like the narrative of this film as it dragged out too much and then ending made the whole film absolutely pointless as nothing happens.

The Deal Analysis

The film begins in what seems to be a forest or a woodland area, however it has a road. A long shot is used to show someone who has there hood up beginning to walk down the road. The filming then keeps jumping to show that periods of time have passed. As well as there is tense, fast pace music playing. It then comes up with the film title of 'the deal' and the film credits. A medium shot and close up is then used to show the main character making a deal with an unknown character in the woods.
An over the head shot is then used to see who the main character is trying to shoot as he suddenly now has a long gun in his hand. He then shoots and gets one of the two people he was aiming at. The second person then decides to try and run towards the gun. Then another person with a handheld gun decides to try and shoot however it is unclear who they are trying to shoot. There then seems to be a shoot of but not one seems to get hurt. It then becomes clear that they are trying to shoot towards each other as an over the shoulder is shot from the main characters point of view to see the other character. He finally hits his target and walks over to him. He then picks whatever was dealt to the character at the start and walks off.

I did not like this film as the story line was very unclear and at the end I wasn't sure who died and who didn't.

Research on Paranoia

People that experience paranoia have beliefs that other people are intentionally trying to do them harm even no there is no actual evidence of them doing so. Paranoia is the unknown fear that something bad is about to happen, however not knowing what and that other people are to blame for this as there are to be believed to have planned it out.
People who have experienced the symptoms of psychosis regularly have paranoid thoughts which becomes a frightening. They live in the fear that they are going to be psychically harmed, believe that things are being said behind their backs, have people plotting against them or even trying to control them by manipulating their thoughts. Sometimes the person with paranoia doesn't even know who they're scared of.
In general people with paranoid have a constant fear, however there are different types of threats that they can feel paranoid about, such as:
  • Psychological or emotional harm - thinking that someone is against you, such as saying stuff behind your back, planning stuff against you, intentionally annoying you and so on.
  • Psychical harm - having thoughts that someone is going to intentionally hurt or kill you.
  • Financial harm - having thoughts that someone is trying to steal from you, damaging your stuff or manipulating you into giving them money.
Persecutory delusions are seen to be the most extreme versions of paranoid thoughts as they are one of the most common symptoms of schizophrenia; although not everyone diagnosed with schizophrenia will have them these types of experiences can be related or come along with voices that confirm the person's beliefs and fears. They are a symptom of paranoid schizophrenia which is a sub-type of schizophrenia, sometimes people who are diagnosed with this may see themselves as being important in some sort of way and thus this is the reason that they are being persecuted with the illness. They can also experience auditory hallucinations, sinister whispering or laughter as well as voice that can be seen as mocking or threatening.

Some people can be given the less common diagnosis of  'delusional disorder' if they do experience persecutory delusions however do not experience hallucinations.

Anyone who is a victim of persecutory delusions is more than likely to withdraw themselves from other people in their life to protect themselves from getting hurt therefore to avoid situations where they feel threatened. They mostly will spend a lot of time by themselves worrying about their fears rather than turning to someone for help as they do not seem to trust anyone. If someone is content that other people are intent on hurting or harming them, they begin to interpret actions and events in a way that confirms their beliefs for them rather than considering alternative explanations.

I love You Analysis

'I Love You'
Produced by Adam Wright

The short film begins with a close up of the persona's eyes with delicate childish music playing in the background, as she applies make up to her face the camera stays close up to her face it then carries on to show close ups on what the persona is doing as the next shot is a close up of her fixing her hair. It is then followed by a medium shot of what the persona looks like as she applies more make up it then goes back to a close up of her hands as she places her make up down, this then begins to give the audience that the actions that are being shown are going to be significant to the story line. She then removes some of the make up that she has just applied shown using a medium shot then changes to a close up of the music box that is playing in the background the box then gets shut and the movie title is shown on screen.

The scene then changes to a kitchen and the persona's movements are still being tracked however the persona seems to be shown as nervous. As the scene goes on it is evident to the audience that the woman persona is preparing to see her significant other as she is preparing a candle lit dinner. It then shows a close up of a glass that she picks up and switches to a close up to a candle light flame that is beginning to go out as it is flickering quite fast connotes to the audience that something is about to happen, then in the background you hear the diegetic sound of a glass smashing.

She then sits on the floor and slowly picks up the pieces of smashed glass and says "when he comes home we will definitely notice, i hate this kinda thing" presenting to the audience that the persona is now nervous for when her second half is to arrive home. It then cuts to the male persona on the phone saying "she can't do anything right" and carries on to explain onto what she has done wrong then goes onto say "I think it has been doomed from the start" also the male persona is first shown from the back leaving the audience in mystery as the woman persona's appearance is shown almost straight away in the story line.

Unfortunately, half way through analysing this film the video was blocked due to copyright issues therefore it is difficult to carry on the analysis. This has made the importance of not using audio that is not copyright free. However from what I did get to analyse the idea of the film was great however some of the footage could have been better.

Storyboard

I have used a range of shot types to show the location and the confusion on the actors face. I will follow the rule of thirds where possible to insure the shots are dynamic and stylish I have used a close up on the characters hand to show that he is trapped within the location that i have based him in.

I have decided to use a black and white filter to achieve the style of film noir, the reason for this choice is to emphasise the feeling of the character being trapped. It also signifies to the audience that the character is in a state of a dream and it is not reality. The alter ego is shown with shaky camera affects as well as the camera is not in focus to show a state of the characters imagination.
I am going to use editing techniques to add a flash to when the alter ego disappears this will be further emphasised through audio. There will mainly be long shots to show both characters and then medium/close ups will be used to show the characters body language and emotions to his reactions. This should support the audience to understand his state of mind as there are some shots such as the long shots which can be seen as a point of view shot.

Survey and Analysis of survey

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VQXTRZ3

So in my survey i got the exact asked amount of responses of 100 the reasoning behind the amount of responses is due to the accuracy of how well i want my research to be, as due to if i only got a small amount of responses they would be highly limited and then i wouldn't get the necessary information that i need out of my survey, therefore with 100 responses i get a more varied response and more accurate and to the point.

My first question was ''what is your gender?" the reasoning behind this is so that i can target the right audience, it then also helps to create a cast due to males normally prefer to watch women or women prefer to watch men depending on the genre of the film. The predominant gender in my survey was Male so that means my persona will most like be male due to females are portrayed to be the weaker gender therefore a male will feel more comfortable watching a male go through self discovery.

My next question was "what is your age?" and the most dominant age range was 18- late 20's, therefore my target audience will be mainly to young adults. Age is important due to it will set the pace to my film because younger adults prefer faster paced films due to them being more inducing this would contrast to an older generation which prefer a build up and slower pace so that they can take an easier understanding to it.

The third question i asked was "what is your favourite type of short film?" which I then gave them the choice of the three types of short films, narrative, documentary and anamation so that I could get a good idea of which type of short film is most popular and which one will most likely have the biggest audience if I create. Narrative was the most popular answered therefore I have decided to make a narrative  short film due to it will give me my highest audience

The next question i asked was "what short films have you watched?" so that i can find out what the audience that have filled out my survey's genre of short film would be. I got a varied amount of answers from stupid answers that are invalid to my research so i will not include them, not seen any at all to a massive list of various different short films. The list of films i got were Le voyage dans la lun, mall, Wallace and Gromit, 2+2=4, One minute time machine, Plug, Vengence, Remember my story, One man and his dog, From the future with love, Waste, Immersion, Maybe, Eat the tourists, Elefante, The flying man, Inside, Unwind, Removed, Post it, Text me, One mans loss and promexity, Charlie McDonnell's short films, Promemity, The most beautiful thing, Slim time, Room 8, Brain Divided, Coming out, Simpsons short films, Journey through the Night, Swan Song, Waiting for Woody, Remembrance, Feast, Shock Theatre, The Boxer, Minecraft the film and so on. The genre's that were written instead of films in this question were thriller, action and documentaries, therefore i decided to choose a thriller/horror short film.

The next question i decided to ask was which do they prefer out of feature or short films, the majority of 65% said short film therefore the next question i went on to ask was why they chose short films compared to feature films. I then got a varied list of responses such as they take less time to watch, easier to follow the story line, it's nice to get to the point quicker, they contain more knowledge, they are more creative and don't necessarily follow codes and conventions, tends to be highly creative and they often use music to portray emotions rather than narrative script which can be much more effective to the audience.

Where Am I In My Current State of Coursework

Currently in media, I have decided my chosen brief of a short film under the genre of psychological/horror and the reason in which to why I changed over to a short film instead of carrying on with advertisement due to I knew if i carried on with the advertisement brief I knew i wouldn't have been as successful as I have experience within short films and I enjoy this brief much more as personally I find it more interesting.

I have tried to analyse as many short films as i can and still currently carrying on to do so, the reason in which this part of the research is so delayed is due to the fact that i want my analysis to be at the highest standard that it can be and that I don't just try to get it over and done with, only for it then to be half heartedly done and not to the best of my ability. However, I have analysed 10 film posters which highly helped me in my project due to now have some idea of what i want my film poster to look like. I want the film poster to be black and white due to most posters within my genre of short films have a black and white theme to them; i then want my persona to be predominant on the poster thus giving my audience somewhat clues to what my film is about as it will have a title of "Isolation" which automatically gives off the impression that the persona that is displayed on the poster is trapped wherever they are.

I have one post of secondary research where a blogger on youtube talks about a film that he has recently watched and highly criticises it, this was highly helpful for me as it began to make me realise what things i should be mainly watching out for whilst watching a film and how to make it easier and more basic, rather than writing a load of random notes that later on i would look back on and realise that i didn't understand or even that they don't really make that much sense. Therefore, due to this helping me create a better understanding how to analyse short films, i have decided that I need to carry on with further secondary research so that i can develop my skills even further.

I have also looked into the codes and conventions of short films and written a blog post of what needs to be included within my product for it to be able to be passed as a ' short film'.

Analysis of Peep

Peep
Produced by Micheal Evans

The film begins with a medium shot of the protagonist using high key lighting to make the audience focus on her; she is laying in bed and seems to be looking over or at someone which automatically begins suspense to the audience. It then changes to a full shot of the woman persona laying on top of the bed sheets looking over a man who is laying in the bed sheets, this therefore shows that she is either not welcome in the bed she is currently laying in or that she has somewhere else to be. Slow suspense music plays then there is a sound of a knock at the door, there is then a medium shot of the woman's face as it shows that state of confusion on her face. The next shot is of the front door with highly suspense music, making the audience feel on edge there is then another three knocks at the door and yet still no one has gone to answer the door, making the audience become highly curious on what is actually going on, it then cuts a shot to the time of 1:47am which then gives the audience an insight that whoever is at the door should not be there. It then cuts to the woman persona's face, still looking highly worried and afraid, she then decided to get up from the bed very slowly which connotes that she is unsure of what she is about to do, it then cuts to a shot which makes it looks like someone is watching her from the hallway and you can see her shaking and still very hesitant on what she is about to do, the use of the lighting of the room creates to shadows on each side of the wall, making the scene become much more eerie, again you hear three knocks at the door so whoever it is, is very persistent on someone answering the door. The mis en scene then becomes very dark as you can barely see the persona anymore as they are walking in darkness as well as there is a lot of space on screen which presents her isolation thus creating higher suspense as there is also slow tense music playing. A close up is used to present danger as well as isolation as the persona is petrified as you can see the fear in her face due to the camera being so close up, it then begins to create high tension as both of the characters on screen are right in front of each other but the only thing stopping them from anything happening is the door, however they both can see each other through the small hole in the door known as the 'peephole' therefore this then links with the movie title which gives a clue to the audience that whoever is behind the door will be highly significant to the narrative. As the persona we've got used to seeing on the screen looks through the peephole there is then a crashing sound which makes the audience jump as the camera turns to who is standing outside, the audience is then confused as the same persona is on the outside of the door as well as the inside it then turns out to be a flash back (which is confusing as there was no clear indication that it was a flashback to begin with) as it shows her partner answering the door, it then cuts back to the persona walking away from the door crying.

Where will my film be set?

Due to my film being a psychological thriller or something that is somewhat along the lines of this genre, as the person is trapped and has no way of getting out, i decided that the best possible place to base my film would to be to film in it a place which can be related to horror or other psychological film, such as treasure island which is based on an island, which in itself is incapable of being able to escape without authority and a full blown plan. Then the fact that it is based in the middle of the island with high security presents the danger which the protagonist is beginning to get himself into due to nothing that is safe would be protected or hidden away that much.

Therefore this means that i could either base my isolation film in a forest/woods due to they are the typical setting of where a character is trying to escape such as in horrors therefore for the audience they can easily relate to the panic and distress of the persona's dilemma as the scenario is relatable or even recognisable.

However, a typical psychological non escape film is based within a room which the persona cannot escape, such as Saw 1 two men are locked up in a bathroom with only a certain amount of space to move and to escape the room they have to complete certain tasks that saw gives them or he gives them clues towards how they can get out, however the whole suspense to the film is they both do not know how they actually end up there or where they are in general all that they really do know is that they are in a bathroom with a stranger which is the type of film i want to create.

I want to create a film where a person wakes up to be isolated and confused with whats going on, whether or not they are in a dream or whether they are in real life due to them being in a random room/woods with no escape with no memory of how they got there. Of course they would begin to believe that they are in a dream if they have no proof to prove to themselves that it's not? therefore this then leaves the audience uncomfortable and leaves them in suspense as well as leaving them questioning the film a lot thus making them want to watch the rest of the film. Such as wanting to find out whether or not the persona actually does escape, whether or not they find out how they got to the place that they are trapped in or even finding out whether or not it is in fact real life or just a concept of their dreams.

Therefore, to decide where i'm going to film i need to either find a plain room or woods that i can get to be authorized to film in, so from now on in the production process i need to go to both of these kind of places and see which of settings would fit in with my genre of film the best, so that i can produce the best possible short film that i can.

Planning

I decided to follow through with my idea of the isolation film as the story line is more original and i can gain more experience with the experimenting and different idea's I can get from making this narrative.

Over the half term I hope to have managed to find an actor, a full detailed story line, a mock up film poster and a place I plan to film in.

Secondary Research

Within this 4 minute clip a youtuber analyses a short film called 2+2=5 directed by Babak Anvari made in 2011 then released online in 2013. He starts with a short synopsis of the whole story which he goes into the deeper level of meaning that the films message is trying to explain as it represents the domination of authority and how it subliminally shows authorities of war within the short film and their roles within their authority, as well as the main message which you can get from it is that the higher authority try to manipulate the lower society by forcing them believe what they want them to think such as changing their knowledge from 4 to 5 which as in society if information was to be changed then the majority would rebel for justice as in the human race we find it hard to accept changes once we already have the facts. He then goes into the detail of the set and how it adds to the message that the director is trying to express as the walls are grey and dull thus making them look like prison walls creating the personas of venerability then the character build up creates a man of high authority and scares the audience due to his power that has been created, as once the rebel student begins to rebel the audience feels scared for him due to they know he won't back down any of his power to a student. He then goes onto explain how the reason in which why the film is so successful is due to the message expressing the problems in social conduct and putting them into a relatable place for the audience so that it is easier for them to engage themselves and relate to the story which i also agree with.

Ideas I have so far on narratives

Bad Influences:

  1. Starts with the representation of the antagonists death/suicide
  2. Tracks back to meeting new friends/close friends they already have
  3. Friends influence them into doing illegal substances
  4. Leads to overdose/being spiked
  5. Show the lead up to their death
  6. Show the 'friends' reactions (they don't care, laughing about it, ignore it) Are they true friends?
  7. Possibly see the after spirit looking over them; was it really worth it?
Isolation:

  1. Antagonist shown in an isolated room (partly like a mental asylum)
  2. They keep trying to go towards the door so they can get out
  3. Every time they get closer to the door they flash back to where they began
  4. Then someone opens the door and they can walk straight out
  5. They were in their bedroom the whole time

Codes and Conventions of Short Films

Length and Basic Info:
  • The normal duration of a short film is around 5-15 minutes long as from what i have seen from the ones that i have analysed, the ones that were most effective were around 5 minutes long due to they got straight to the point thus keeping the audience drawn in the whole way throughout.
  • There is usually only main characters not any secondary due to the duration of the film is not long enough to include irrelevant people that the audience do not understand why they were include thus causing confusion.
Concept:
  • Everyday situations more casual than a feature film this allows the audience to relate to the film more and be a part of it therefore making the film come across as more realistic and believable.
Budget:
  • Usually low budget or no budget at all.
  • They normally don't include a soundtrack as it takes too much time off of the film.
  • Actors are usually amateurs around the ages of 15-27.
Characters:
  • The characters usually range between 2-5; the use of less characters makes it more personal to the audience therefore makes it more effective as there is not enough time to build characters in short films.
  • There will only be one protagonist throughout the whole plot.
Twists:
  • There will always be a twist to every short film to make it more interesting and plot built.
  • Use an everyday situation however add something to it that you wouldn't normally expect to add suspense and curiousity.
  • Sometimes keep some of the story (clues) until the end so that it keeps the audience in their seat.
Technical/Reoccurring Themes:
  • Usually very basic equipment is used such as an SLR and tripod.
  • Voice overs/narrations are typically used to give information to the audience quickly.
  • There are usually no wars (such as explosions) or fantasy involved.

Summary of Film Posters

From the film posters that I have analysed obviously I will need to include a film title and the persona of my film on my film poster as they are the most significant part of every film poster, i will need to have my persona taking up most of the space on the poster as they are the most important part of it, as for my title every poster is set out differently therefore it will have to come down to where it suits and looks the best when I edit it. The certificate rating does not seem to be too important as it is only shown on 1/10 of the film posters therefore this is one of the things i will not be including on my film poster. A slogan used to catch the audiences attention and to make them think/want to see the film more is used on 4/10 of the film posters I have researched into, thus making it not a compulsory part so i will decide when it comes to editing my film poster whether or not it looks better with or without the slogan. The credits at the bottom of the film poster are used on 7/10 of the film posters i researched into, therefore i decided that it is compulsory that i include this on my film poster. Also the typography of the credits and title are more than always capitalised therefore in my poster both will need to be capitalised.

Analysis of Film Posters

A Short Film about Love (Short Film)
The drawing makes the target audience of teenage girls to middle aged woman curious into who is behind the heart, therefore intriguing them into watching the film so that they can find out the answer to the mystery. As well as love overall is shown to be something significant, overpowering and fantastic however in this film poster it is presented to have destroyed the protagonist, therefore inducing the audience again as they will want to know what has made him distraught from love. The typography itself is quite interesting as it looks handwritten therefore gives off the impression that it is a personal story however the handwritten writing above and below the film title are quite hard to read therefore become irrelevant to the audience as if it is hard to read they won't bother to try and work it out.
The Lost Purge (Short Film)
This film poster does seem to look quite professional and displayed out in a correct manor as it just seems to look like the producer has tried to make the film look better than it is to draw in their audience as they have put two of the awards that the film was given. However, the typography fits into the genre that the producer is trying to produce therefore makes the film poster seem more interesting. Finally the main picture of the film poster does not seem to tell part of the story or give away anything about what the film could be about therefore the audience are not as indulged into wanting to see the film as they would if they were too see another film poster with what would seem more of a story behind it, however the only message that the audience can get from this film poster is that it is about a young boy. I would say that the target audience of this film would be teenagers to young adults due to it looks like some sort of thriller.

Insomniacs (Short Film)

The typography and the design set out looks professional due to it looks like what a feature film poster would look like thus making it appealing however what seems to be lighting that is over the top of them at the top of the film poster (yellow circles) this is usually used at the start of feature films on screen however on a film poster it just looks like the print hasn't come out well or that they edited the poster badly. However the image presented on the poster fits in well with the film title therefore gives their audience an insight to that the film title is not completely off topic to what the film is about.
Best Man Wins (Short Film)
The plane that flys over the typography connotes that the main protagonists life will improve throughout the film due to it flying upwards not crashing this then links to the film title as the 'best man wins'.  It then looks like the survival of the fittest wins as there is two men having a fight in the kitchen. The typography itself seems quite professional, however the movie title seems to take up most of the film poster which can seem as if the producer did not what else to put there, resulting in it looking unprofessional.
The Longest Daycare (Short Film)
Due to Maggie being a baby you would expect Marge to be on the film poster along with Maggie however due to Maggie being the Protagonist in the film the producer must have thought just to focus on the protagonist of the film to then draw in the audience, as well as the fact that The Simpsons is a very well known and loved show so therefore the characters are much loved along with it therefore for the producer to present one of the characters to be in trouble, especially one of the most vulnerable it automatically draws in the audience due to them wanting to find out the outcome. The way in which the producer presents danger towards Maggie on the film poster in by presenting her as if she is in a horror film, high key lighting to show that she is scared/in shock then low key lighting to hide out everything around her thus creating a sinister atmosphere. The typography is the typical 'The Simpsons' typography that they use on every show which is then recognisable to the audience so that they know it is an official advert not an amateur film.
2:AM (Short Film)
The title itself sets the tone of the film because of the vibrant colours and bold typography. This further sets an time and place for the film to take place. This then allows for the audience to understand that time is a key aspect in the film because of both the title and the image below it. The use of colour makes the film poster attratvie and bold while the time frame. The set is based in a retro diner which is further supported by the title as it is neon and fits into the theme of a diner. The slogan presented next to the protagonist creates mystery and then draws in the reader as it is quite a catchy slogan due to it leaves the audience questioning itself.
Mr Hublot (Short Film)
The typography that has been used for the movie title creates the sense of mystery due to it is not a typical type of typography and is used on other myserious and fantasy films such as nanny mchpee. The main character is also presented on the film poster which then connects the audience to the story automatically as the character is presented to be for children therefore he seems cute and adorable to the adult audience which then makes the adult audience want to go and see it due to them having a connection of finding the protagonist sweet and adorable.

Pokemon the movie 2000 (Film)

The target audience for this film poster would be children to teenagers. What makes this film poster so effective and persuasive to watch the film is that it is one of the small amount of posters that i have analysed that includes a slogan, this therefore catches onto the reader and makes the film stick into their head so that they can then look forward and cannot wait to see the film. As well as, they have included most of the characters that are going to be in the film on the poster this means that the audience can see if their favourite character is in it which would then persuade the audience to see it even more.
The Iron Giant (Film)
The typography is not an original type therefore creates originality to the film as well as the giant is hidden in the a of giant which further links the character to the title. Although he is presented to be a huge giant and take up most of the space on the film poster he is in a caring position of looking after the little boy which then subverts the conventions of a stereotypical giant to destroy the world. The use of the colour blue then connotes to the audience that he is not from earth as both the sky and the character are blue this is then further supported by the typography being blue.

The Naughty Room (Film)
Two scenes from the film have been introduced on the film poster which then gives the audience an insight to what the film is about. The high angle used on the bottom scene presents venerability which is then connoted to their slogan as he is about to experience one of the circumstances for whatever reason he needs to. The colour of the typography is quite bright and colourful which then connotes to the audience that the film isn't completely serious and that the genre is a comedy as well as the scenes presented from the film look quite funny and comedy like.

Analysis Of Brain Divided

Brain Divided
Produced by Josiah Haworth

It begins with showing the typical who produced it, it then comes in with a good idea for typography where the menu has the film name written on it, it then pans over to the right where you see a man sitting on a dinner table by himself patiently and anxiously waiting for someone to join him as there is another seat placed at the table. You can tell that the persona is anxious due to a medium shot being used to show his facial expressions of being unsure and him twiddling his thumbs probably due to boredom, he then sighs and rests his head in his hand which then shows his patience is beginning to wear thin. He then tries to keep himself amused by playing with the cutlery and then it zooms into his eye then goes through his iris into his brain where you see a blue character controlling what he is doing. The colour blue connotes to the audience that this is the calm, tranquil side of his brain as blue is associated with peace and tranquility, as well as in the background you can see the divided line where there is also a red side therefore the red side is the opposite to the blue as the colour red is associated with anger and frustration or love and passion therefore leaves the audience anticipating what is to come. It then shows the red side sleeping on a hammock and begins to start dreaming where it starts kissing and cuddling the air as well as there are romantic and appealing pictures girls shown in the background.

He then falls from his daydream and then blue side sighs and rolls his eyes it then goes back to the persona himself where his date has arrived and his face looks somewhat in shock that she has shown up. Male gaze is then introduced as the camera tilts up from her feet where you see the woman's legs going up to a tight fitted dress then up to a press face where she then flicks her hair and keeps her body language quite tight which connotes that she is quite timid and shy, followed along by an awkward looking smile. She also has bright green eyes, green is usually associated with envy so therefore it can be implied that the woman persona could be quite an envious and jealous character. It then cuts back to the blue side looking happy that things are going well then the red side realises what is going on and automatically falls in love with what he see's, the blue side then shows some sort of panic, however carries on to control the human to greet the woman that he is on a date with but carries on to watch what the red side is about to do, it cuts back to her greeting him back and then cutting back to the red side beginning to take control of the situation as he pushes the blue side out of the way of control. The red then makes the persona to make extreme movements that would be considered to be 'cringe worthy' where he takes off his glasses and pulls the woman closer and then kisses her hand as if he was about to dance with her which she responds with an awkward shy smile, he then gets over carried away and starts to kiss up her arm where she begins to look as if she is beginning to get a bit weirded out. The blue then panics as he realises how bad the situation is going and takes control of the brain back where he automatically gets straight off the woman and puts his glasses back on with the expression of embarrassment on his face and then quickly moves to offer her to sit down as he pulls her seat out and waits for her to sit down she then begins to look a lot more comfortable.

It then shows the blue side deciding what he is going to converse with the woman and then cuts to him sitting down and speaking the words the blue is commanding him to say which the woman looks highly happy with and is conversing back very happily, it then cuts back to the blue side sitting contently at the control desk as things are going well. The red then sneaks up on the blue and takes control again and makes the man seems extremely arrogant and pretentious where the woman giggles and becomes shy again, you then see the change in his face where the blue takes control as his eyes cross over and he puts his glasses back on, the glasses then begin to become a signifier of the change in character of the male persona. They both then carry onto fight for control of the brain and the date scenario, until the red has full control and takes it too far to the point where he is about to supposedly romantically kiss her, where she responds by rolling her eyes slapping him and getting away from him and begins to show anger as she clenches her hands and her face begins to get scrunched up, then storms out the restaurant. It then shows through the door his reaction to this of somewhat panic and despair, it then cuts to the brain where an alarm has began to start going off and the red side starts to panic himself as he grabs his face and his eyes frantically move, he then turns to the blue side in desperation and the blue side is looking for his glasses as the red punched him and made him loose them, the red then runs over finds them and puts them back on his face in desperation of him to sort out the mess that he has just made of the scenario. The blue then immediately responds and quickly acts upon the situation, where the man runs after the woman called Scarlett, which she reacts still in anger and frustration, the blue and red then decide that if they work together that they will be able to sort out the situation which works as the both the persona's end up kissing and Scarlett accepts it and kisses the male persona back. It then cuts into her brain where there are two typically girly persona's screaming with excitement over what has just happened, one of them is pink and one of them is purple which are stereotypical colours for girls, however they are also very similar compared to the red and the blue which presents the women brain to be less contradictory and more simplistic. She then begins to get carried away with the situation as her face quickly changes and begins to become what we be seen to the audience as 'psycho' as she straight away asks him to marry and have children, the male brain then panics and presses the avoid button,  it then leaves the audience into what happens next as that is where the story ends.

Overall, the animation and the idea of this film was great and very well thought out. As well as, it is highly evident that it is a more professional film then an amateur film.

Analysis of Partly Cloudy

Partly Cloudy
Produced by Pixar

An animated short film about birds that deliver whatever their chosen cloud makes for them to give to people on earth, however as most of the fluffy nice cloud produce cute things such as puppies and kittens the most beaten up bird has to deliver from a sad cloud that often produces not the best or safest of animals. In the beginning a tracking shot is used to follow the birds to show where they deliver the parcels; the first place in which the clip cuts to is delivering a baby to a woman's window it then cuts to two kittens being delivered to a cat flap, then to two puppies at a kennel of an older dog this then presents that the birds are delivering parcels for the good and not the bad as well as it gives the audience and overall brief to what the short film is going to be about. It then carries on to use a tracking shot to follow a group of peck's as it is then leading the audience to where the presents come from in the first place which is up from the clouds, as it shows each peck going back to its beloved cloud.

It then uses a medium shot to present all the happy clouds laughing together then pans down to the unhappy cloud where he is alone and underneath everyone else, however is still presented to be happy as he is smiling whilst making his new creation, even though it still comes out as something bad he is still shown to be happy as it is his own creation and tried to teach it to behave. His own peck then returns however his peck isn't in as good condition as the other pecks due to most of the parcels he has to deliver try to destroy him as is shown throughout the clip, however he still always returns to Gus the grumpy cloud and when he does they show affection and love towards each other by hugging and joking about however as the clip goes on the peck is presented to start to get worn out and fed up by what he is doing.

It then cuts away to a happy cloud as this is supposed to shown the perspective of what the Peck and Gus are looking at as it shows the happy cloud producing something cute and harmful, it then cuts back to them both and Gus looks at his peck in despair as Gus knows that he could be much better off with one of the other clouds however the peck still then carries on to deliver his parcels for him. It then pans up to the other clouds again therefore connoting to the audience that something is going to happen with the main peck and the happy clouds, the Peck then flies off to the cloud that he keeps looking over at then a gliding motion to a low angle is used to show the build up of Gus's anger as he begins to produce lightning, a close up is then used to show the emotions of his face, then a medium shot is used to present the Peck and his new clouds reaction to when Gus starts producing rain (crying) as they look over in shock, the peck then flies over with a parcel in which he has just received from the happy cloud, a feather then flies over his face which is a signifier of the Peck himself therefore presents the arrival of his return, he then opens the parcel and the audience see that he has got protective gear so that he can no longer get hurt by the parcels that Gus produces.

I thought that this was a very good animation as the idea of the film then produces a comforting message to the audience about how friends should never give up with each other they should persevere and try and help one another and comes across as very professional produced.

Analysis of Feast

Feast (2014)
Produced by Disney

An animated film about a stray dog that gets re-homed however starts to become at home too fast and is presented to be no longer 'loved' as instead of food that seems to be a treat, gets given Brussel sprouts and other vegetables which the dog then refuses to eat.

Medium shots are used throughout the film to start to build a view of the character on scene as if you were to use a close up you would not be able to see all the actions that the persona is making which is highly important due to his actions build on his character. This is shown by when he is getting what he wants he is jumping and running around the house however as things start not to go his way he scowls and becomes a lot less of a cheerful character as he starts to throw the food about instead, although this somehow makes the audience still feel sorry for him even though it is being portrayed that he is spoilt and has become too used to the lavish lifestyle straight away from being on the streets.

As the film goes on in the background of one scene you see the happy couple dancing behind the dog, this could connote that now the couple are to what could be seen as their 'honeymoon' stage that their focus on their pet is beginning to become distant as the lighting in the scene is also used to show this as the couple are in high key lighting and the dog is in low key lighting presenting that he is now out of their focus. Then one night then man comes down at night and opens the fridge to bring out junk food to share with his beloved pet as his relationship has gone down hill, the fridge then gives off high key lighting to the dog therefore presenting that things are going to become good for him again which in fact they do, he starts beginning to be given good that he was being given before however as the dog and his owner share a spaghetti bolognese the cress becomes a symbolic signifier of a new relationship. As the dog realises what he can do with the cress and runs away to what he knows could be a good relationship for his owner and lures him to her with the cress, which in the outcome works as they go on to get married and be happy all together, no one gets left behind or in the dark therefore leaving a positive ending/meaning to the film.

Therefore, leaving the ending to be a happy and positive message it leaves the audience to be open as children as well as adults and teenagers can watch it. As well as, it is a very professional looking animation.

Why did i choose a short story for my brief?

At first when i was first given this task i decided i wanted to produce an advert as i thought it was the brief that appealed most to me and would interest me the most however as i began to research more into the brief the more i found it was not the best brief for me to produce as i was loosing lack of interest very fast therefore my final product would not be as great as something i had enjoyed looking into. Therefore the next brief that then seemed more practical and interesting to look into was short films as they show and explain stories to an audience in a different concept as to how films would present a story. Although it can be argued that i could of presented and done this through doing an advert due to most adverts tell a story so that it stays in the audience's head such as the John Lewis adverts are famous for their Christmas adverts as they produce a different plot to the story each year as well as Coca Cola, however i wanted to produce something that was merely based on a story that would intrigue the audience and then the outcome to be based on the story not to end with a random product. At first I started looking into documentary types of short films and thought that i was convinced with this genre however as i began to delve more into the genre i realized that there was not much that i could work with and I know what skills I have so therefore I knew i could not work with animation as i do not know how to use the software to produce an animation this then led me to making my own narrative short film. I now just need to work out what type of narrative I want to produce and then build an original story that will be induce my audience into wanting to watch it.

The History Of Short Films

At the beginning of the film industry all films were short varying from clips of circus performers to then people living their everyday life; as the 20th century came along this all changed as this is when the film clips started to become longer therefore made films more appealing to the audience due to it developing into something greater.

The very first films that were ever shown were shown through Thomas Edison's Kinetoscope in 1894 to the public eye; this was a 'peepshow-like device' which was for individual viewing. These types of films along with projected films which made them succeed were one shot actuality films that would depict things from celebrities to scenes from everyday life. The supposed most well known film from this time era is Lumiere brothers' Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat (1895) which for this time era people would have been trembling in their seats of terror, however for our day in age we would probably see it as highly poor quality and plot twists; these type of short films very much suited Victorian modes of presentation.

However in the early 1900's recording and editing technology began to improve massively which allowed the film industry to produce longer, multi-media films which could include different shots and sounds. The most supposed memorable short films from this time era are:

  • Georges Relies's A Trip to the Moon (1902)
  • Edwin S Porter's The Great Train Robbery (1903)
From 1910, studio competition and audiences began to demand longer more narrative films and this is where the first feature films were made they then began to become more accepted than the short film due to the audience could become more induced into the film for longer thus making the experience of the film more enjoyable. This attracted more of the middle class crowds therefore this helped to fund the construction of more realistic sets on camera over the next three decades.

German expressionism

German Expressionism refers to a matter of creative movements that happened in Germany during the 1920's, these developments were a part of a larger Expressionist movement within North and Central European art. It is a movement that is inspired by many medias such as theatre, architecture, music, painting and sculpture.

The first expressionist films made up for their films being so low budget by using designs with wildly non-realistic, geometrically absurd sets, along with painted designs on the walls/floors to represent lights, shadows and objects.

Commercialisation

What is commercialisation?

the act of commercializing something which then involves something in commerce.

  • "the government tried to accelerate the commercialisation of this development"
  • "both companies will retain control over the commercialization of their own products"
  • "It is a pity that Christmas has become so commercialised"
  • 'The commercialisation of football has turned it from a sport into a business"

How does the process work?

1) A potential industry/company send a letter of their intentions and the background of their company/institution to the commercialisation office for authorisation.
                                                                                      OR

A researcher will identify a potential industry for successful business and then link them to the commercialisation office.

2) The innovations and commercialisation office will evaluate how much potential the industry has of becoming successful and decide whether or not they go ahead with the scope of application.

3) The innovations and commercialisation office then organise a meeting between everyone involved.

4) They then will prepare non disclosure agreement's (a legal contract between at least two parties that covers confidential information that the parties wish to share between one another for individual purposes, however restrict access to or by third parties).

5) Both parties within the agreement will make a commercialisation agreement with terms and conditions.

6) A progress report will be submitted to the company that have succeeded by the innovations and commercialisation office.

7) Finally, all payments will be payed such as royalties, loyalty fees, etc.
